To
create a project that would fit the neighborhood context, minimize
density and encourage social interaction, this mixed-use project
for the Community Development Commission for the County of Los
Angeles County creates the traditional courtyard style as an
infill project for 70 units of affordable housing for low-income
families. The commercial part of the project includes a corner
courtyard 9000 SF building designed for a neighborhood Child
Care facility and a Health Clinic.
All buildings relate to their street side neighbors with two
story traditional volumes, arched entries and individual entries
to ground floor units to encourage community connections. Upon
entering these archways the design provides further separation
and connection to a series of lush semi-private outdoor courtyard
"rooms" that include play yards, family gathering and outdoor
community spaces.
