Lipsman
Tansey Residence
Silver
Lake, California
Located on a double lot overlooking Silver Lake, the 60 year
old house needed substantial renovation to accommodate the new
Owners tastes and expanding family. Working substantially within
the existing footprint, the residence was reconfigured to provide
a kitchen open to a large family dining room and outdoor dining
patio, a separate suite for elementary age twin boys, a central
entry and living space. The renovation also seeks to provide
a unified contemporary image to a house that had been subject
to several add-ons over its lifetime. A long redwood clapboard
wall ties together the linear plan with redwood lanterns punctuating
the composition to provide a rhythm of form from the exterior
and of natural light on the interior. A long planter along the
street blends the native vegetation by the lake with the wood
and copper of the façade to allow the house to sit quietly
in its natural hillside setting. Landscape screens separate
the boys play area from the street.
